American Internet analytics company, comScore, has released their latest findings on mobile app trends after surveying over 1000 mobile users. Despite a small sample size, their numbers and stats can help you learn quite a bit when it comes time to develop your own mobile app. So what did they find?
Unsurprisingly, the most used app currently available is Facebook’s. Rounding out the rest of the most used apps are Google Search, Google Play, and Google Maps. These powerhouses won’t be dethroned anytime soon, but you don’t need Google’s clout to make a splash in the app market. In general, comScore’s findings on mobile app usage should give you an idea of just how important mobile is in day-to-day life and who you might want to consider catering to.
Those surveyed claimed to spend around 68.2 hours each month on smartphone apps. And who’s spending the most time? That would be that magical demographic of 18 to 34-year-olds. This also happens to be the group that is the most likely to take a chance on new apps in the App Store.
Another less than surprising fact is that the most popular apps are messaging apps. One messaging app whose popularity they found to be exploding at an unreal growth rate of 651% is Timehop. Timehop is an incredibly simple idea, but those are often the most successful. Timehop lets users see exactly what they were doing on social media one year ago from today. That’s all, and it’s becoming huge.
The point of all this is that it’s up to you to do a lot of research before your app is actually developed. You have to be aware of every trend and statistic and you have to know exactly who your audience is. Following the numbers can lead to success.
